Our Dennis Carpenter fuel tank sending units embrace modern technology, but are designed to fit and function with the vehicles original gauge. 1956 was the first year that Ford moved to a 12volt electrical system and was also the only year that Ford used this style 12volt sender and gauge in their vehicles. The sender and gauge both used a heating coil inside them and the the sender was also designed with a bimetallic arm inside to control the voltage sent to the dash gauge, allowing the needle to show the level of fuel in the tank.
Due to decades of use and being constantly exposed to fuel and air the original senders rust externally and internally causing internal contact connection issues and the bimetallic arm to be out of adjustment. These factors all lead to inconsistent function and improper gauge readings, giving the driver a false reading of the level of gasoline within the gas tank.
